We’re kicking things off with the upcoming EURO PRIDE that’s conveniently taking place in Vienna, thank Heavens. Don’t get me wrong, I’d classify myself as a world-renowned “travel fag”, but especially during the busy pride season it feels so good to party in my hometown for some time, wouldn’t you agree? Additionally, it’s easier to really enjoy all the fresh meat from the comfort of my own bedroom (or their hotels hihi).
But it’s not all fun and games, as I’m sure lots of you haven’t forgotten.
PRIDE was born out of the necessity to fight for lesbian and gay rights. It was the night of June 28th 1969 when it all started in a little bar called “Stonewall Inn” on New York’s Christopher Street. It was the only bar in NYC where gays, lesbians, transgender people and drag queens of all ethnical backgrounds were allowed to come together and dance. When on that night the police did one of their regular raids, the guests weren’t gonna take the humiliation anymore that always came with those raids. They were fighting back, but thankfully the 200 guests were not alone. The riots against the police lasted for 6 nights and included 2000 protestors, street battles, trash cans set on fire, smashed windows, beer bottles and handbags used as projectiles and much more. 50 years ago our LGBTIQ foremothers & forefathers fought tooth and nail for the equal rights we’re enjoying today in many countries, and that’s why the Stonewall Riots signify the beginning of the gay rights movement.
Let’s keep reminding us that the battle is not over yet and that there is still more work to do. Let’s celebrate the good and spread awareness of all the improvable issues.
I can’t wait to see all of you there. I promise you we’ll have the time of our lives and show everyone why our way of life belongs just as much in this world as all the others do. Kisses & Hugs
Yours truly,
Sassy Sebastian
